Did you know that nearly 90% of US homes don't have proper attic insulation? Adding the right amount of insulation to your home can save you up to 15% on your energy bills, according to the Department of Energy. If your home was built a while ago, then these savings can be much higher.

Different Types of Attic Insulation
There are four standard types of insulation you can install in your attic.
Cellulose Insulation
Cellulose insulation is a type of fiber insulation that's made up of 75 to 85 percent recycled paper, cardboard and denim. It's used as a blown-in insulation in enclosed walls and attics. This insulation type is also called loose fill insulation.
It is heavily treated with boric acid, borax or ammonium sulfate. These chemicals aren't known to be hazardous and are effective flame retardants that also help to reduce pest issues.
Fiberglass Insulation
Fiberglass insulation is made from glass and other raw materials to fiber fibers that look like wool. It can be blown in or made into "Batts" that are easily installed. Batts need to be properly installed, or they will not insulate your home correctly.
Spray Foam Insulation
Foam insulation comes in two forms: spray foam insulation or injection. Spray foam is normally sprayed into open areas or cavities in new construction, attics, and crawl spaces. It is sprayed as a liquid that expands to fill up the cavity.
Injection foam is pumped into existing cavities, such as walls which is great for insulating existing homes.
Mineral Wool Insulation
The lesser of the group. Mineral wool insulation looks like fiberglass but comprises rock, blast furnace slag and other raw materials. It's naturally fire retardant but can be hard to find.
There are a lot of factors that need to be considered when assessing the type of insulation required for your home. As your local Pensacola experts, we make the process of choosing the best attic insulation simple.

How Much Attic Insulation Should a House Have?
Proper insulation levels, in addition to a clean and sealed duct system, are vital to your home's thermal performance. You should have a minimum of R-38 (about 13 inches) insulation in your attic and a maximum of R-49 (about 17 inches).
All types of insulation are measured with an R-value. The R-value gives you a number to the effectiveness of heat flow through the insulation. As this number increases, so does the capacity of your attic insulation to insulate and restrict heat flow.
If your home is older than 10 years, chances are that your current attic insulation has settled, which could mean you need more insulation to achieve the desired energy efficiency.
